According to iNews, Newcastle have been told it will cost £50m to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad.
What’s the story?
Well, it was northern football correspondent Mark Douglas who revealed the news, as Newcastle prepare for a busy January transfer window.
The Magpies have millions to spend in January thanks to Amanda Staveley and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).
Interestingly, the update on Nunez comes after Mais Futebol revealed that Newcastle held a meeting with Benfica to discuss the striker’s availability.
The 6-cap Uruguay international is a man in demand, with Manchester City and Atlético Madrid also interested in his services according to iNews.
Douglas adds that Newcastle’s owners are big fans of data-driven recruitment, so it’s no surprise to see Nunez on their radar.
So far this season, the 22-year-old has scored 18 goals in 22 games.
Newcastle should pay up for Darwin Nunez

In our view, Newcastle should meet Benfica’s £50m asking price, as we feel it’s only going to increase as he continues to finds the back of the net.
Additionally, this represents a good opportunity for the Magpies.
iNews add that Nunez – who has been compared to Edinson Cavani – has a £100m release clause, so Newcastle could actually sign him for 50% of what Benfica feel he is worth.

The market has been hit by COVID-19, so many clubs are struggling financially and are more open to bids for their star players.
Furthermore, Callum Wilson can’t seem to stay fit, which will be a worry for Howe going into the second half of the season.
Could Nunez be the man to fire Newcastle to Premier League survival? Only time will tell.
