The Chronicle claim Newcastle have beaten both Chelsea and Manchester United to the signing of Kieran Trippier. The defender is expected to be announced as a new Toon signing on Thursday, signing a deal until 2024.

Trippier, 31, was seen on Tyneside on Wednesday – entering Newcastle’s HQ. The Times report that the defender is expected to sign a two-and-a-half-year deal at Newcastle, with a wage likely to be around £100,000 a week.

Newcastle have desperately needed a right-back of late – with Javi Manquillo not seen as the long-term solution. Jacob Murphy is naturally a winger and Emil Krafth is often seen on the right side of a back three.

Now, the newest report from the Chronicle claims that Newcastle’s speed in getting a deal sorted for Trippier has blown two Premier League clubs aside; Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea, and Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United.

Newcastle beat Manchester United and Chelsea to Trippier; a huge coup

Trippier is a brilliant defender. But he is much more than that, he offers Premier League experience, leadership, international know how, versatility as a right-back or wing-back – and incredible ability from set-pieces.

Reports suggest that a fee is likely to be in the region of £15million in total, with only £12million up front. What does it mean for Manquillo? Well, if an offer comes in for the Spaniard – you would expect he could be sold.

Murphy is likely to be used more as a winger, while Krafth has been one of the better performers of Eddie Howe’s reign. But the signing of Trippier could open the flood gates – certainly, Newcastle fans are delighted.
