The Times claim Newcastle are about to hand Kieran Trippier a contract worth £100,000 a week. The English star was spotted arriving at Newcastle on Wednesday – and he is set to put pen to paper on a deal until 2024.
Trippier, 31, is set to become the first signing of the club’s new regime following the £305million takeover back in October. A fee for Trippier is believed to be an initial £12million, with add-ons taking it to £15million.
The ex-Tottenham, Manchester City and Burnley defender – the latter where he worked alongside Eddie Howe – waved to fans as he walked into Newcastle’s HQ. He is expected to be announced on Thursday.
Now, The Times report that Trippier will be handed a £100,000-a-week wage – £20,000 more than his Atletico deal (90Min). It is also claimed that he will be given a two-and-a-half-year deal, until the summer of 2024.
Trippier contract details: Newcastle getting themselves a bargain
Initially, Newcastle fans were delighted to hear that their cash-rich owners have not been taken for mugs in the window. They have not overpaid for Trippier and in fact, they are getting themselves a properly good deal.
In terms of his contract, £100,000-a-week wages for Trippier seems more than fair. Of course, they would have to tempt him to join a relegation-threatened side from the current La Liga champions.
Handing Trippier a deal until 2024 is a smart move. Only 18 months until 2023 would not have been long enough, while many would have questioned 25. That could of course be extended in the future. A good deal.
