According to the Telegraph, Newcastle have made contact with Everton as they aim to sign Tottenham target Anthony Gordon.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that Antonio Conte wanted the 21-year-old to join Richarlison in north London.

Now, however, Spurs face competition from the Magpies, who have held talks with the Toffees over a deal for the England Under-21 international.

Everton have no urgent need to sell after raising £60m from the sale of Richarlison, and in our view, there would be uproar around Merseyside if Gordon was sold as well.

It is understood that Newcastle have simply tested the waters on Merseyside, and if they receive encouragement, a bid of £35m could be submitted.

Interest in the youngster comes after he scored four goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, emerging as a bright spot in an otherwise abysmal campaign for Everton.

It was said that Gordon is interested in a move to Tottenham, although it will be intriguing to see if Newcastle and their near bottomless pit of cash can tempt him to Tyneside.

Anthony Gordon should avoid both Newcastle & Tottenham

In our view, it is too soon for Gordon to leave Everton.

The winger has only just cemented himself in the first-team at Goodison Park, and he now finds himself in the ideal environment to grow under Frank Lampard, in front of a fanbase who adore him.

In our eyes, he should take a leaf out of Richarlison’s book, and become a hero at Everton before even thinking about joining another Premier League side.

Too often, we have seen bright talents distracted by the temptation of a big-money move, only for their careers to fizzle out – see Jack Rodwell, Patrick Roberts and others.

Hopefully, Gordon understands this, and commits himself to Everton for the next few years, at least.
