Report: Newcastle eyeing Cillessen as well as Rulli

Newcastle are likely to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

Spanish outlet El Gol Digital claims Newcastle United are interested in signing Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen despite retaining a likeness for Real Sociedad stopper Geronimo Rulli.

Rafa Benitez failed to lure a goalkeeper to St. James’ Park, despite being linked with a whole host of players such as Willy Caballero, Pepe Reina and Orestis Karnezis.

Now, the Toon still seem keen on signing a new goalkeeper and 28-year-old Cillessen has emerged as a new target for the Tyneside club ahead of the January transfer window.

The Netherlands international will be desperate for a move in the near future after making just one appearance for Ernesto Valverde’s side all season in a Copa Del Rey clash against Real Murcia.

A move to Newcastle would see him instantly become the Toon’s number one, where the report claims he will be given game time and the chance to regain his confidence.

Newcastle remain interested in Argentinian stopper Rulli, with reports first emerging over their interest in the 25-year-old last month.

However, former Ajax goalkeeper Cillessen could now be the Toon’s first choice as Barcelona’s number 13 looks for a move away from the Nou Camp sooner rather than later.
