According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have submitted an improved offer for Lille centre-back Sven Botman.
The Magpies have been linked with Botman for the past few weeks, with many claiming that he’s their top centre-back target this month.
However, with Lille driving a hard bargain and the Magpies’ opening €35m (£29m) bid being rejected, it was reported that the Tyneside outfit had given up hope on signing the defender.
Despite the fact Sport claimed Newcastle had given up on Botman just 48 hours ago, United are back in for the Dutchman.
Details are yet to emerge around how much Newcastle have bid for the defender described as a ‘great young talent’ by Owen Hargreaves, but given that the Magpies’ first bid was £29m, you have to imagine this offer is in excess of £30m.
Lille aren’t keen to sell, but after the finances of Ligue 1 clubs were decimated by the pandemic, they may be considering cashing in, depending on how big this bid is.
Newcastle are seemingly very keen to improve their defence and after adding Kieran Trippier to their squad, it looks like Botman is the Magpies’ next priority.
This certainly seems to be a situation worth keeping an eye on.
