According to Sky Sports, Celtic have made Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie one of their key targets for January.

It’s claimed that Celtic did hold talks with Union about a deal over the summer, but ended up signing Shane Duffy instead.

Celtic still want to sign another centre back in January though, most likely because Duffy hasn’t exactly impressed since his arrival.

They’re still keen on McKenzie now, and he’s high up on their list of targets – but whether they can get a deal done is another matter.

Union’s sporting director Ernst Tanner claims that Premier League clubs as well as a Bundesliga side are keen on signing McKenzie, meaning Celtic risk missing out.

The 21-year-old is an American international and has impressed in Major League Soccer, making 52 first-team appearances for Union.

He isn’t the biggest centre back at 6ft tall, but he has real potential and could emerge as a longer-term solution for Celtic than Duffy.

Celtic fans recently urged McKenzie to make the move to Parkhead – and they may just get their wish if Celtic move quickly.
