According to a report by The Times, Manchester City want to sign Kalvin Phillips before their pre-season tour of the US begins.

Phillips has been linked with Manchester City for quite some time now, and it looks as though the Cityzens are on pole position to land the England international this summer, despite interest from Liverpool and Tottenham.

Labelled ‘brilliant‘ by Jordan Henderson, the midfielder has proven himself at Premier League level over the past two seasons, while he’s also been a star for England, winning the Three Lions’ Player of the Year award last year.

The Premier League champions are certainly in need of a new midfielder after the departure of Fernandinho at the end of last season, and Phillips would be the perfect player to fill the void left behind by the Brazilian.

Indeed, the Leeds star would be excellent at the base of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. After all, they don’t call him the Yorkshire Pirlo for nothing.

The 26-year-old is an incredible passer of the ball, while, just like Fernandinho, he’s a tenacious tackler who can also do a job at centre-back when needed to.

Of course, this is a blow for the other interested parties such as Tottenham and Liverpool, but when Manchester City come calling these days, it’s hard to turn them down.

Whether or not this deal comes to fruition or not remains to be seen. After all, the midfielder is a boyhood Leeds fan and he has remained loyal to the Whites for years at this point.

Regardless of what happens, Phillips will go down as a modern-day Leeds legend, but even the most hardened United fan couldn’t begrudge him for wanting to join arguably the best team in the world.
