The Athletic have reported that Newcastle United were not very serious about signing Philippe Coutinho and Aaron Ramsey before they moved to Aston Villa and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers respectively.

The report has claimed that signing Ramsey from Juventus and Coutinho from Villa was ‘never going to happen’ for Newcastle in the January transfer window.

Newcastle ‘never seriously’ had Ramsey, Coutinho and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele in their ‘immediate thoughts’, according to the report.

Former Arsenal midfielder Ramsey moved to Rangers on loan from Juventus on January transfer deadline day.

Coutinho, a former Liverpool attacking midfielder, joined Steven Gerrard’s Villa on loan from Barcelona earlier in the window.

The Daily Mail reported in January that Newcastle were among the clubs interested in Ramsey.

CBS Sports claimed last month that Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is an admirer of Coutinho.

Big players will come to Newcastle United… eventually

In our view, household names such as Coutinho and Ramsey will come to Newcastle.

It will take time, but if things are done correctly in the next few years, then Newcastle could become a new Manchester City or a new Paris Saint-Germain.

Ramsey and Coutinho are at the top of their game now, and given that Newcastle are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, it was unlikely that they would move to St. James’ Park, even on loan.
