Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Liverpool are now actively scouting PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands World Cup star Cody Gakpo – amid reports that Tottenham and Arsenal are also interested in landing the exciting attacker.
Gakpo, 23, came within an inch of moving to the Premier League in the summer. Manchester United tried and failed, before Southampton attempted to sign him late on. Even Leeds chief Victor Orta had an agreement on deadline day.
Following on from a failed move to one of those three Premier League clubs, interest in Gakpo remains. In fact, it is growing. The Mirror say Arsenal have been tracking Gakpo for a year, while GMS say Tottenham could try to sign him.
Little surprise, given Gakpo already has an immense 30 goal involvements in 24 games this season. He has scored 13 and laid on 17 assists. Rated at £44million, Jones claims that Liverpool have been scouting the PSV sensation.
“They have watched him and monitored him very closely, as closely as other teams. They just haven’t been linked with him as frequently. It dependson how their squad shapes up when they return as to whether they will go for him.”

Jones: Liverpool actively scouting Gakpo, Arsenal and Tottenham keen
Gakpo’s stats are quite incredible. To simply score 13 goals in 24 games would be eye-catching. But to have a huge 17 assists alongside that figure is quite remarkable. Little surprise that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are interested.
For £44m, and at 23, he might even be a bit of a bargain. The likes of Manchester United, Leeds and Southampton will be ruing their inability to get a deal done. Can the Reds get him? Well, Gakpo may prefer a side where he is first choice.
At Liverpool, they have Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and others. Arsenal and Spurs also have plenty of attacking stars, but lack the depth the Reds have. So, Gakpo may prefer North London instead.
