Liverpool were presented with the chance to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus for just £21million – but the club didn’t move.
That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (05/09, p62), who claim that Liverpool could have brought Neuhaus in for much cheaper than first thought.
Gladbach were sticking to the £34million release clause Neuhaus has in his contract, with contact made earlier this summer according to The Mirror.
Bild’s Christian Falk noted that Neuhaus had his heart set on a move to Anfield, seemingly sensing this was his big chance to move to Liverpool.
Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg added that Liverpool were ‘highly interested’ in Neuhaus, but things then went a little quiet.
With Gladbach keen to sell, they allegedly dropped their asking price on Neuhaus to just £21million – a £13million discount.
Liverpool and FSG were unmoved though, deciding not to make a move at the reduced price despite seemingly being interested earlier in the summer.

Liverpool fans were left frustrated by the lack of signings this summer, and hearing that the Reds passed on a potential bargain for Neuhaus may only cause more annoyance.
The 24-year-old is a tall and technically-gifted, meaning he could replace Gini Wijnaldum whilst bringing something a little different too having been compared to Thomas Muller for his smart runs off the ball.
That Liverpool didn’t even bite on such a low price suggests that they’re maybe backing away from Neuhaus entirely, as they’re unlikely to get a better price than £21million any time soon.
