According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Denis Zakaria, who is also of interest to Newcastle.

What’s the story?

Well, the 25-year-old’s contract with Borussia Monchengladbach expires in June, so Liverpool can sign him for a cut-price fee of just €10m (£8.5m).

Gazzetta dello Sport believe Zakaria dreams of playing in the Premier League, and is also keen to work with Jürgen Klopp.

It’s his admiration for the German which makes the Reds leaders in the race for his signature, ahead of Newcastle.

It was Siamo La Roma who revealed that the Magpies are keen.

Borussia Monchengladbach have to sell Zakaria in January if they want to receive a fee, or they’ll lose him for nothing in June.

The German outfit are currently 11th in the Bundesliga, not far from the European places, so they must decide if they’d rather keep their No.8 on board to achieve their goals this season, or recoup some cash.

Why do Liverpool and Newcastle want Denis Zakaria?

Who wouldn’t want Zakaria for just £8.5m? Liverpool and Newcastle have found a potential bargain here, and it seems the Reds will win the race.

Zakaria – a 40-cap Switzerland international – is very highly rated, and has even been compared to Paul Pogba.

He has also been likened to Patrick Vieira, and has attracted interest from Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City as well.

Zakaria has made 11 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring two goals while providing one assist.

At 25, he’s also right in the midst of his prime years.

In our view, this would be a tremendous way for Michael Edwards to bow out of his role – it would be a typical Edwards deal, to say the least.
