Ajax now want just £10 million for Nicolas Tagliafico after Premier League giants Leeds United held exploratory talks with the Argentina international, as reported by De Telegraaf.
The newly crowned Eredivisie champions have certainly made their stance clear.
At the age of 28 and with just two years left on his contract, Tagliafico is “free to leave”. Not our words, the words of his agent.
Ajax director Marc Overmars said broadly the same when asked about the future of the attack-minded full-back too, just days after AS reported Leeds had held talks over a deal that would see Tagliafico swap Amsterdam for Elland Road.
That was on 25 April – some six weeks ago.
Leeds looking at Tagliafico
Since then, reports linking Leeds with a move for Tagliafico have been harder to find than a misplaced Kalvin Phillips pass, with the Yorkshire giants seemingly turning their attention to a number of younger, more long-term options.
Is this why Ajax have suddenly decided to slash Tagliafico’s price tag to a bargain £10 million?
The 29-cap Albiceleste pocket-rocket was valued at £20 million just 12 months ago, when Arsenal were linked.
Furthermore, Ajax appear to be going full steam ahead in their pursuit of AZ Alkmaar’s flying Dutchman Owen Wijndal, with Overmars admitting he is preparing for life without Tagliafico at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
At this stage, failing to sell one of their key players could cause more problems than it solves.
