Reported Leeds United target Nicolas Tagliafico is “free to leave” Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer transfer window, the Argentine’s agent has told FC Inter News.

It speaks volumes about Ajax’s famously freewheeling style that their diminutive left-back is famed more for his ability in the final third than anywhere else.

Tagliafico scored 11 times for the Amsterdam giants between 2018 and 2020, bursting into the penalty area with devastating effect.

And if Leeds can be considered the closest thing English football has to an Ajax of their own – with Marcelo Bielsa bringing his unique brand of total voetbal to West Yorkshire – it’s not hard to imagine Tagliafico thriving at Elland Road.

This week, AS reported Leeds had made contact with the 28-year-old who is understood to be valued at £13 million.

And Ricardo Schlieper, Tagliafico’s representative, believes Ajax won’t stand in his way.

“Last year he could have left – but then the whole European transfer market changed due to the pandemic,” Schlieper explains.

“We have agreed with the Dutch club that, if a suitable offer arrives, Nicolas would be free to leave (this summer).”

Speaking to AjaxTV last year, director Marc Overmars admitted as such, making it clear a club boasting a superb track record when it comes to selling and replacing key players would be more than happy to let Tagliafico chase his dreams.

“With Nico, he has reached the age that I understand he wants to take the next step,” the former Arsenal and Barcelona winger said. “If that chance is there, then I think you shouldn’t take it away – if the conditions are good for all parties.”

Romain Perraud, Miguel Gutierrez, Patrick van Aanholt and Alex Moreno have also been linked with Leeds, who appear to have made a left-back their top summer priority.
