French outlet Homme Du Match claim Leeds are not the only club vying for Wilfried Gnonto in the coming weeks, but the youngster from Swiss side Zurich is also a target for West Ham and Nice. The Italy international looks set to go.
Gnonto, 18, is considered one of the next talents off the Italy conveyor belt. Clocking up 69 senior appearances for Zurich, the youngster has scored 12 goals and laid on nine assists. He has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
His form, despite it being in Switzerland, has done enough to get him called up to Italy’s senior side. He has played four times for Italy, scoring in a Nations League defeat to Germany. Leeds are said to be close to agreeing a move.
Gianluca Di Marzio says a £4.25million move could be done within the next 10 days. However, Homme Du Match say Leeds are not the only club looking to sign the Italy talent, with Nice and West Ham also considering moves.
Like Leeds, Nice have missed out on Arnaud Kalimuendo. He left PSG for Rennes last week. They still require a striker, as do Leeds. HDM disagree with Di Marzio in terms of price, claiming Zurich want £8.5million for their young talent.
West Ham vying for Leeds target Gnonto
Even if the price is as much as £8.5million, it is a bargain. Gnonto is a real talent and given he already has Italy caps, he is destined to be a player that becomes a household name in the Champions League in years to come.
So, if Leeds, West Ham or Nice can pick him up for less than £10million, they are getting themselves a bargain. What Gnonto needs to decide is which club gives him the best chance of first-team football.
Leeds have plenty of examples of giving youngsters game time, and could do with an option in attack. West Ham have options in attack, but they have the Europa Conference League to give him game time.
