According to The Athletic, Leeds United are becoming increasingly resigned to the fact that Kalvin Phillips will likely leave the club this summer.

The Yorkshire Pirlo has remained loyal to Leeds for many years now, but after proving himself in the Premier League and for England for yet another season, big clubs have come calling.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have been linked, and Leeds feel as though they’re fighting a losing battle in trying to keep the midfielder at Elland Road.

Luckily, there is some good news for Leeds fans.

This report states that there is also a strong sense that the 26-year-old is not a genuine option for Manchester United this summer, and while losing Phillips will be a blow, the fact that he’s not headed to Old Trafford will make this news more digestible.

Manchester City are seemingly the frontrunners for Phillips’s signature right now. The midfielder’s high-energy style and glorious passing range would make him a great fit for Pep Guardiola’s side who are in need of a new defensive midfielder after Fernandinho’s departure.

Phillips will leave Leeds as a modern-day club legend. He’s the archetypal local lad come good, he played a key part in the club’s promotion to the Premier League and he’s remained loyal for as long as he can.

Sadly, a footballer’s career is short, and if Phillips wants to fulfil his dreams of playing in the Champions League and challenging for top honours, he has to leave west Yorkshire.

The midfielder may well have played his final game for the Whites.
