According to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest are trying to make a late move for Weston McKennie from Juventus. This news comes as a surprise, as it was believed that Leeds United were close to agreeing to sign the American midfielder.
The signing of McKennie would be a huge statement of intent from Forest. After all, he has been labelled as a ‘superstar’ in the past, and it would signify that they are serious about securing their top-flight status. He would bring a lot of energy and drive to the midfield, and he could be a great addition for the Tricky Trees.
However, you have to wonder if Forest are making the exact same mistake they did in the summer. The Reds went crazy with new signings at the end of last season and it took the squad a long time to gel.

Steve Cooper’s side now finally look like they are clicking, but after already adding Gustavo Scarpa, Chris Wood and Danilo to their side, the addition of McKennie could again unsettle a squad that has finally gotten to grips with one another.
McKennie’s signing would, of course, be a huge disappointment for Leeds United, who have been linked with him for a while. They’ve been in talks with McKennie, and it’s thought that he’s agreed personal terms to sign for the club. But now, with Forest making a late move, that is up in the air.
However, there is reason to believe that McKennie may favour a move to Leeds. The midfielder has a number of American compatriots at Elland Road such as Jesse Marsch, Brendan Aaronson and Tyler Adams, and one has to imagine that he’ll be keen to join the cohort of his fellow countrymen in west Yorkshire.
It remains to be seen if Forest will be able to pull off this move, but it would be a huge coup for the club if they were able to sign a player of McKennie’s quality.
