According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes has been told he is free to find a new club.

It’s claimed that Paul Cook wants to completely overhaul his squad at Portman Road, and is beginning the culling process.

Eight players are leaving at the end of their contracts, and ‘almost the entire squad’ have now been told they can leave this summer.

Midfielder Downes is surprisingly a part of that, with Ipswich now open to letting him go when the transfer window opens.

Downes has come up through the Ipswich ranks and now has 99 appearances for the club – but now looks set to leave before reaching a century.

The 22-year-old failed to register a goal or assist this season, whilst knee problems hampered his progress.

There is potential in Downes, and it’s notable that Arsenal wanted to sign him last summer according to The Chronicle.

Ipswich wanted £7million for Downes then, and the fee involved would surely be a lot, lot less now with the Tractor Boys so open to selling.

Whether Arsenal would still be keen remains to be seen, but they may well sense a chance to land something of a bargain if Ipswich don’t want Downes.
