According to the Telegraph, Everton have now moved ahead of Premier League rivals Tottenham, Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle in the race to sign James Tarkowski.

What’s the story?

Well, Steven Gerrard believes this is the best opportunity in the market this summer, but he could now miss out on the £70,000-a-week man.

Tarkowski is available after Burnley were relegated from the Premier League, and unsurprisingly, there are a number of sides interested in his services.

The Telegraph believe Everton and Frank Lampard are leading the race, with Aston Villa now less likely to sign the England international.

It is said that Villa are now unlikely to sign Tarkowski due to the £26m arrival of Diego Carlos from Sevilla.

However, a move for the Burnley colossus isn’t entirely out of the equation yet.

If Gabriel Agbonlahor was in Gerrard’s position, he certainly wouldn’t give up on Tarkowski, as the 35-year-old has urged the Villans to sign him.

In 37 appearances this season, the Burnley No.5 scored one goal, while also providing two assists.

Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham are also said to be interested.

In our view, Tarkowski is exactly the type of player Lampard needs at Goodison Park.

Only four sides conceded more than Everton’s 66 concessions in the Premier League this season, so the backline is clearly a weak point.

Michael Keane has largely struggled to impress, whereas Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina have also failed to make the Toffees a formidable outfit.

Tarkowski, on the other hand, is a phenomenal defender, who would immediately become the best centre-back in Lampard’s squad.

Following Burnley’s relegation – and expected financial issues – a deal shouldn’t be too expensive for Everton either.

Keep an eye on this situation, as a significant development could soon happen.
