According to The Athletic, Southampton have completed the signing of Everton target Gavin Bazunu from Premier League champions Manchester City.
What’s the story?
Well, after losing Fraser Forster to Tottenham, Ralph Hasenhuttl has moved to sign the Republic of Ireland international, who will compete with Alex McCarthy for the No.1 jersey.
Bazunu joins the Saints in a deal worth £12m, which could rise to £15m with add-ons.
The Athletic believe Manchester City have also negotiated a buyback clause, similar to the one Chelsea have with Tino Livramento.
It comes after Everton also expressed an interest in signing the 20-year-old, who has already won ten caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Bazunu spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, where he made 46 appearances in all competitions and impressively kept 17 clean sheets.
His efforts earned him the Player of the Season award at Fratton Park.
Southampton have beaten Everton to a gem
In our view, Bazunu has the potential to become one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers, so Southampton have got their hands on a hugely talented prospect.
The Irish wonderkid delivered a fantastic display up against Cristiano Ronaldo of all people, saving a penalty from the six-time Ballon d’Or winner in 2021.
Bazunu was also being targeted by Liverpool last year, so he is clearly a tremendous prospect.
In our view, the only issue is the buyback clause, as it means Manchester City can take the youngster back whenever they want, leaving Southampton searching for a replacement.
Nevertheless, the Saints are in need of a standout No.1, as Forster and McCarthy shared the role in between the sticks last season, with neither really making the position their own.
Bazunu has only recently turned 20, although with his immense talent, attitude and already vast experience, we believe he will shine at St Mary’s.
