According to SPORT, Barcelona are set to meet with Gavi shortly to offer him a new contract, with Liverpool interested in signing the wonderkid.

What’s the story?

Well, the 17-year-old Liverpool target has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season as the Reds look to bring him to the Premier League.

Gavi has broken into the first-team at Barcelona, making 25 appearances in all competitions this season.

Amazingly, the teenager has also become a regular for Spain, with Luis Enrique handing him four caps so far.

Such is the rapid nature of his progress, SPORT describe his current terms as being completely out of date.

It comes after Spanish media outlets claimed Liverpool wanted Gavi at Anfield, having watched him make his debut for Spain against Italy.

Now, SPORT believe both Gavi and Barcelona have agreed to sit down to discuss fresh terms.

As things stand, his contract has a €50m (£42m) release clause.

Liverpool must try to sign Gavi now

In our view, if Liverpool don’t sign Gavi now, then they may never get their hands on him.

Spanish sides tend to insert ridiculous release clauses into contracts, to safeguard themselves from having their best assets pinched.

For example, Barcelona recently inserted a €1bn (£832m) release clause when tying Pedri down to a new contract.

Therefore, if Jürgen Klopp doesn’t muscle in on Gavi’s contract talks now, then the Reds may end up with no chance of signing him.

In our view, it may even be worth triggering his current £42m release clause quickly before it disappears.

Liverpool’s midfield doesn’t boast fantastic depth, and the Reds struggle to create when players like Thiago or Naby Keita are injured.

Therefore, Gavi would be a necessary addition, one who can impact the present as well as become a potential superstar in future.

Keep an eye on this saga – it will be interesting to see if Gavi and Barcelona can come to an agreement over fresh terms.
