According to El Nacional, Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona wonderkid Gavi, after he made his debut for Spain last night.

What’s the story?

Well, Liverpool are keen to snap up one of Europe’s most precocious wonderkids.

Gavi – aged just 17 – played 85 minutes last night as Spain ended Italy’s 37-match unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory.

Now, El Nacional believe Liverpool want to sign him, despite the fact he has a €50m (£42.4m) release clause written into his contract.

The Reds believe that is a fair price to pay, given the potential of Gavi.

Jürgen Klopp’s side face competition from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain for the teenager.

Liverpool must also convince Gavi, as El Nacional believe he is focused on succeeding at Barcelona and continuing his development.

In response to those admiring him, Barcelona are desperate to tie the midfielder down to a new contract.

What would Liverpool be getting in Gavi?

If Liverpool were to sign Gavi, they’d be getting a fine controller of the game with composure that defies his years.

The prodigy born in 2004 has been likened to Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi, who was renowned for his vision and ability in possession (BBC).

Gavi has already made seven first-team appearances under Ronald Koeman this season – five in La Liga, and two in the Champions League.

Currently, Klopp doesn’t really have an orchestrator of the play at Anfield.

Despite having plenty of excellent midfielders, the Reds lack an Andrea Pirlo-type playmaker, so Gavi would bring something new to Anfield.

He looks set to cost a fair bit, and Barcelona will surely make it as difficult as possible for him to leave the Camp Nou.

However, if Liverpool can get their hands on him, it would be a major coup.

In our view, Gavi has the potential to become a Ballon d’Or winner one day.

Keep an eye on this situation, as Gavi’s contract expires in June 2023.
