According to the Daily Mail, some Premier League clubs – including Tottenham and Aston Villa – are firmly against a World Cup request from Argentina.

Well, the Argentinian Football Association have asked Premier League clubs who own Argentina internationals to leave them out of the final round of Premier League fixtures before the World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni is keen to begin his preparations early ahead of the tournament in Qatar, although the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa have no intention of cooperating.

The Daily Mail believe Argentina’s request has been met with firm resistance.

Argentina are hoping for Antonio Conte to leave Cristian Romero out of the clash with Leeds on Saturday 12th November, as they have a friendly against the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday 16th November.

They are also keen to see Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez left out when Aston Villa travel to Brighton on Sunday 13th November.

Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United, and Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton, are the only other Argentina internationals playing in the Premier League.

Tottenham & Aston Villa right to ignore Argentina

In our view, Spurs and the Villans have every right to ignore Argentina’s request – after all, they pay the weekly salaries.

FIFA rules state that clubs do not have to release their players for international duty until Monday 14th November.

Additionally, Tottenham and Aston Villa shouldn’t feel like they need to do Argentina any favours after what happened in 2021.

At the height of the global pandemic, top-flight teams refused to release Argentina and Brazil players for their World Cup qualifiers in countries that were on the Government’s COVID red list, as it meant they would have to quarantine for ten days after returning.

Eventually, Spurs and the Villans allowed Romero, Giovani Lo Celso, Martinez and Buendia to depart, only for Brazilian health officials to suspend the game after just six minutes – an utter waste of time for everyone involved.
