TEAMtalk reported in April that West Ham want to sign the former Everton attacking midfielder in the summer transfer window.
West Ham manager David Moyes worked with the 27-year-old at Everton.
The Athletic reported last month that Newcastle United would be interested in signing Barkley, but only on loan.
Do West Ham United need Ross Barkley?
Barkley did not have the best of times at Villa.
There were moments when the Chelsea-owned attacking midfielder did well, but on the whole, it was a rather underwhelming spell.
The 27-year-old made 18 starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Villans.
The former Everton star scored three goals and gave one assist in those matches.
Although West Ham have a good attacking unit, they will need a replacement if Jesse Lingard does not come back.
The England international attacking midfielder spent the second half of the past season on loan at the Hammers from Manchester United.
There is speculation that Lingard wants to stay at United.
Barkley could be Lingard’s replacement, although it remains to be seen how much Chelsea will want for the attacking midfielder.
