Borussia Dortmund are reportedly plotting to sign Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita in 2023, with the Anfield maestro’s contract set to expire next year with no action yet to take place over a new deal.

According to Sport Bild, the German giants are taking steps already to sign Keita at the end of this season, with the Guinea international looking extremely likely to leave Anfield next summer when the 27-year-old’s contract expires after what has been an unusual few years in the Premier League for the midfielder.

Keita joined Liverpool in 2018 for a then-club-record fee of £55m, yet despite arriving with a huge reputation and even inheriting Steven Gerrard’s no. 8 shirt, the former RB Leipzig star just hasn’t hit the heights many expected the midfielder to hit when moving to Merseyside.

Despite some bright moments, with Jurgen Klopp himself labelling Keita as an ‘exceptional’ talent as per the Mirror, Keita leaving Liverpool feels inevitable at this moment, and Dortmund look to have put themselves in the driving seat to sign the midfielder, potentially as a replacement for reported Liverpool target Jude Bellingham.

With a reported wage of £120,000-a-week, losing Keita’s salary could be quite a weight off Liverpool’s shoulders given how little the midfielder is likely to play if everyone in the Reds squad is fully fit, and a return to Germany with Dortmund could be perfect for the 27-year-old.

Indeed, Keita made his name in Germany with Leipzig, and signing for a big club in the Bundesliga like Dortmund could be exactly what the midfielder needs to restart his once-promising career, with an exit from Liverpool a necessity for the African superstar in 2023.

Dortmund are one of the best ran clubs in all of Europe, and Keita coming in next season as a midfield reinforcement could be a great move for the German giants, especially if Bellingham leaves the club like many expect the England international to do in 2023.

We know that Keita is capable of being a world-class midfielder, and although the Liverpool star has failed to look the part for most of his time at Anfield, returning to Germany could be what unlocks the 27-year-old’s true potential once again.
