According to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Aston Villa made an ‘eye-watering’ offer to Mauricio Pochettino to replace Steven Gerrard.
Unfortunately for the Villans, their attempt to hire Pochettino proved fruitless as the Argentine is waiting for more appealing opportunities to arrive.
It has recently been reported that Pochettino is actually waiting for the Spurs job to come up again as he expects Antonio Conte to be on his way sooner rather than later.
Law says that Pochettino has knocked Villa back, and they’re not the only club in this boat.
Indeed, Nice have recently tried and failed to hire the Argentine, while, according to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest also sounded the former Spurs boss out about a potential move to the City Ground.
Sadly for Villa, as ambitious as they are, a manager like Pochettino isn’t going to be in any sort of rush to join a team that are currently staring a relegation battle in the face.
That’s the stark reality of Villa’s situation at the moment. Their squad is talented and the owners are ready to spend, but at the moment, results aren’t going their way, and a manager like Pochettino, quite rightly, is aiming higher.
So where do Villa turn?
Ruben Amorim seems to be high on their list of targets right now, while Ben Jacobs has also urged everyone to keep an eye on Marcelo Bielsa as a potential candidate.
One thing is for sure, Villa need to find a way to turn the tide soon, because based on recent form, there’s a very real possibility that they could be looking at going down to the Championship if they don’t get this appointment right.
