According to The Times, Newcastle are making progress on a deal for Everton target Conor Gallagher as they close in on Watford gem Joao Pedro.

What’s the story?

Well, with just two weeks left until the August 31st deadline, Newcastle are finally getting somewhere.

The Times believe a deal for Pedro is close after the Magpies submitted an improved offer worth £30m, having seen a £20m bid rejected by the Hornets.

Interestingly, Newcastle believe the Brazilian will provide Eddie Howe with depth in the wide attacking areas as well as centrally, and the South American is keen on the move to Tyneside.

Once that deal is wrapped up, it seems Gallagher will be the next target pursued by Dan Ashworth.

The 22-year-old has many admirers after shining on a season-long loan at Crystal Palace last term, where he won four England caps and scored eight Premier League goals.

Crystal Palace are keen to re-sign Gallagher, while Frank Lampard is also desperate to have him at Everton.

However, it seems Newcastle are in pole position as things stand, as they find themselves in productive talks with Chelsea – The Times do not state whether a loan or permanent deal is being discussed.

If it is a permanent deal, the Blues are said to be demanding £50m.

Newcastle could beat Everton to a gem

In our view, if Howe and Ashworth can bring Gallagher to St James’ Park as well as Pedro, it would be seriously impressive business.

The Chelsea No.23 is one of the hottest properties in English football at the moment, and he will surely want regular first-team football with the World Cup on the horizon in November.

So far this season, Thomas Tuchel has given Gallagher just six minutes of Premier League action.

A midfield of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Gallagher has a bit of everything, so if Howe can construct it, and field an attack involving Pedro, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, Newcastle will be a force this season.

Keep an eye on this situation, with things developing quickly as we approach the August 31st deadline.
