Arsenal are now reportedly leading the race to sign LOSC Lille attacker Jonathan David, with Newcastle United also linked to the Canadian international.

Defensa Central claim that the Gunners are the ‘strong favourites’ for the 22-year-old striker, who this season has been in sensational form for the reigning Ligue 1 champions both in Europe and domestically.

David has bagged 16 goals in all competitions this campaign and is tipped to make a big-money move away from Lille this summer, and according to reports in Spain, Arsenal lead the chase for the striker ahead of the transfer window.

The Gunners are desperate to sign a striker, with Mikel Arteta failing to land one in January which could prove to be a decision that defines Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top-four.

As per the Athletic, the likes of Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are also on Arsenal’s radar, yet with David potentially costing as little as £38m according to reports, the Brooklyn-born superstar is a very realistic option for Arsenal.

The Gunners are not alone in their interest, though. According to CalcioMercato, Newcastle are also in discussions with David over a potential summer move, yet with this latest update placing Arsenal as the leaders, the Toon could be beaten out for the striker by Arteta.

Labelled as a ‘phenomenon’ by a former coach, David has exploded onto the scene in a big way this season for Lille, and with Arsenal reportedly stepping up efforts to sign the striking sensation, the Gunners could be moving fast to beat Newcastle to the Canadian.

Indeed, Arsenal need a striker more than anything this summer, and with the north London side becoming more refined in the past 12 months with their transfer strategy, David could be the player Arteta is desperate to have to lead the attack for next season.
