Arsenal will reportedly firm up their interest this week in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, with Newcastle United also chasing the Brazilian.
According to Birmingham Live, the Gunners are long-term admirers of the Brazilian international, with Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar fans of the 23-year-old Premier League midfielder.
As per the report, Villa are eager to sign Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. Meaning Steven Gerrard’s side could be open to offloading Luiz, who is yet to settle under the new manager at Villa Park.
Arsenal aren’t the only side interested in Luiz, however, as the Athletic report that Newcastle, who are close to signing Bruno Guimaraes, are also chasing the Villa star.
The Gunners are keen to add depth and quality to the position this month, with the futures of midfielders Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny up in the air ahead of the summer transfer window.
And Luiz could be an option, with 90min reporting in 2020 that the Gunners are keen on the midfielder.
With Il Romanista reporting that Villa could sell the Brazilian for £29m, Arsenal could well launch a late move for the 23-year-old, with time running out fast for Arteta’s side to bring in an extra midfielder.
Arsenal will be taking a huge gamble in signing Luiz this month

The transfer window is an ever-changing beast that can churn out left-field rumours in the blink of an eye, and for Arsenal fans, they will no doubt be hoping that their big midfield signing of the window is Luiz.
Indeed, the Brazilian is a solid player who would be a welcome addition for many Premier League clubs. However, for what Arsenal need this month, Luiz doesn’t quite fit the bill for what the north London side or what Arteta is looking for from a midfielder.
