Arsenal and Newcastle United have suffered a blow in the race for Italian attacker Gianluca Scamacca, with Inter Milan opening talks for Serie A striker.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter transfer officials Giovanni Carnevali and Beppe Marotta have met over the past few weeks to discuss a move for Scamacca, with the reigning Scudetto champions eager to sign the striker as well as his Sassuolo teammate Davide Frattesi.

As per the report, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig made approaches for the 23-year-old over January, however, Scamacca was eager to remain with Sassuolo to continue his development, with Arsenal and Newcastle also eyeing the attacker.

As reported by FC Inter News, the Premier League clubs are both keen on the Italian, who has been likened to Swedish and Serie A legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his style of attacking play.

With Inter now making their move for Scamacca, this news will be a big blow for the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle’s PIF-backed owners, with the forward one of the most exciting talents in European football.

With nine goals in Serie A this season, Scamacca is forming a solid reputation for himself in Italy, and his style of play and obvious potential has been a large indicator as to why the likes of Arsenal and Inter are interested in the youngster.

Whilst Newcastle have filled out their striker needs in January with Chris Wood, Arsenal failed to sign anyone in the winter to act as their long-term option to lead the line, and Scamacca could be a candidate if Inter fail to sign the forward.

Athletic, able to hold the ball up and impressive in build-up play, Scamacca could be a cheaper alternative to the likes of Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Arsenal this summer if Inter struggle to strike a deal for the 23-year-old this summer.
