Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Hull City are all chasing the Scunthorpe United winger.
Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Hull City may find themselves in a two-horse race to sign Scunthorpe United winger Hakeeb Adelakun, after a Sun report seemed to rule Sunderland out of the running.
All three clubs are interested in signing Adelakun at the end of his Scunthorpe contract this summer, as revealed exclusively by HITC Sport in May.
However, the tabloid claims the 21-year-old is keen to play at a higher level after turning down the Irons’ offer of a new deal.
If true, that appears to push him into the path of either Nottingham Forest or Hull, after Sunderland’s relegation from the Championship last season.
Whichever club emerges triumphant will still be required to pay compensation for Adelakun, as he is under the age of 24 and has received an offer from his current employers.
However, Scunthorpe only stand to receive £250,000 at a tribunal, despite wanting six times that amount (£1.5 million), according to the Sun.
Adelakun scored four goals and set up 12 as the Irons narrowly avoided replacing Sunderland in next season’s Championship, where Forest and Hull remain despite their own flirtation with the league’s bottom three.
