According to The Athletic, Aston Villa are weighing up a summer move for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.
The Brazilian centre-back was strongly linked with a move to England in the January transfer window, with Newcastle United reportedly very keen, but now, it looks as though he could be headed to the Midlands.
Villa are seemingly very keen to bring in a new centre-half this summer. They’ve recently been linked to Sven Botman, and now, Carlos has emerged as a genuine target.
The Brazilian is certainly highly-rated over in Spain. He’s been described as ‘sensational’ in the past, and he’s played a key role in Sevilla’s recent successes, with his bicycle kick forcing the winning goal in the 2020 Europa League final.
Of course, being a defender is about a whole lot more than bicycle kicks in cup finals, but Carlos is also a very astute reader of the game, and at 29, Carlos has the experience to be a real leader at the back for Villa.
Unfortunately for Villa, getting this move over the line may be easier said than done.
Indeed, Sevilla don’t seem keen to sell Carlos, with their president describing the Brazilian’s departure as ‘unthinkable’ in the winter, so the Villans may have to cough up some serious cash if they want to secure this deal, and that’s before we even consider the competition they may face from Newcastle United.
However, as Villa have already shown with the signings of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara, they’re keen to be ambitious this summer, and a move for Carlos would certainly improve this squad.
This is a situation to keep a keen eye on in the coming weeks.
