According to Fabrizio Romano, Luis Campos is now close to joining Paris Saint-Germain, after Newcastle decided against bringing him to the Premier League.
What’s the story?
Well, after Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi arrived at St James’ Park, there was a major revamp – unsurprisingly.
The Newcastle co-owners sacked Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley, before deciding to replace the pair with Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth, the Director of Football who was recently pinched from Brighton.
However, before Ashworth arrived on Tyneside, it was said that Campos wanted to become the new Director of Football at Newcastle.
It was even said that the Magpies were considering it, although it was Ashworth who eventually got the job.
Now, PSG are closing in on the 57-year-old, with Romano claiming that a positive meeting was held in Doha with Nasser Al Khelaifi, the CEO of the French champions.

Kylian Mbappe may have been responsible for the meeting, as it was said that the 23-year-old’s new contract gives him the power to make sporting decisions at the Parc des Princes.
Newcastle may have made a mistake with Luis Campos

Of course, we must give Ashworth time to prove himself, and his work at Brighton suggests he is very good at what he does.
However, we believe Newcastle may have missed out on a gem in Campos, given the calibre of player he has signed before.
During his time at Monaco, the Portuguese Director unearthed gems such as Bernardo Silva, Fabinho and Thomas Lemar, before finding the likes of Sven Botman, Victor Osimhen and Rafael Leao while working at Lille.

His efforts at Lille even helped them beat PSG to the Ligue 1 title in 2021.
Campos clearly has an eye for a player, so if Ashworth fails at Newcastle, Staveley and Ghodoussi may feel a tinge of regret.
