Luis Campos is eager to become the new Director of Football at Newcastle United, as their Saudi-led owners prepare to interview some candidates this week, per TuttoMercatoWEB.

The Magpies are Campos’ real goal for a return to work after leaving Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille last December. He spent three-years at the club, following a three-year spell at AS Monaco.

Campos has taken his time to accept a new challenge as he demands complete freedom to act as he wishes. The 57-year-old is unlikely to allow directors or coaches to get in the way.

His demand for complete oversight is one of a few factors for Campos’ slow return to work. Despite establishing a reputation for making huge profits when selling players in France.

Genoa had interviewed Campos for their vacant sporting director position recently, but are leaning to Gianluca Petrachi. While Walter Sabatini is also an option after his interview.

Campos would likely accept an offer to be the new Director of Football at Newcastle if the Saudi-led consortium now in charge at St James’ Park do make an offer to the Portuguese.

Reports by Sky Sports soon after the £305m takeover claimed Newcastle were considering Campos among several sporting director candidates. He stands out after turning a profit of in excess of £500m in just four-years at Monaco and Lille – both of whom also won Ligue 1.

Monaco paid relatively little for Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Fabinho or Anthony Martial before selling all for big fees. Leading to Campos’ nickname: ‘The Wizard of Capital Gains’.

Should Newcastle hire Camps as new Director of Football?

Yet despite Newcastle’s interest and Campos’ apparent eagerness, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers have not, yet, hired him.

The Saudi-led consortium will interview candidates for their sporting director position this week, however. Adding another touch to their plans after hiring Eddie Howe as manager.

Fabrizio Romano claimed on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE that former Chelsea Technical Director Michael Emenalo remains an option for the Toon as they look to build a project.
