Over a month on from the sacking of José Mourinho, Daniel Levy is still yet to appoint a new manager for Tottenham.

A number of names have been touted, such as Brendan Rodgers, Graham Potter, Roberto Martinez and Hansi Flick.

Another option was Rui Vitória.

The 51-year-old was said to have been contacted by Levy about the prospect of replacing Mourinho, according to Duncan Castles on The Transfer Window Podcast.

Now, however, the Portuguese coach has been hired by Spartak Moscow.

That is a shame for Spurs.

Admittedly, it’s been a while since Vitória managed in a top division.

His last high profile job was at Benfica, who he left in 2019.

Since then, he has been managing Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr.

However, Vitória is an experienced coach with a winning mentality, who might’ve been able to succeed at Tottenham with the right tools.

As Transfermarkt shows, the man contacted by Levy has won eight trophies throughout his managerial career.

That is mightily impressive, to say the least.

Having said all of this, Mourinho was a hugely successful manager who could boast a number of trophies to his name, but he ultimately failed.

What Tottenham need now is a new Mauricio Pochettino, who can kickstart a project to get the players and fans all reading from the same page.

In our view, someone like Potter – who has his youthful Brighton side playing exciting football – would be a fine choice.

Yes, he isn’t exactly the big name some might want.

However, appointing Potter would be very similar to when Liverpool appointed Rodgers in 2012, a move which helped get the Reds back to the top.
