According to Fabrizio Romano, Amadou Onana now wants to join Everton, after previously admitting he would love to sign for Liverpool.

What’s the story?

Well, the 20-year-old once spoke about the link between Lille and Belgian players, where Divock Origi – a man who has played for the French side and the Belgium national team – was mentioned.

Origi joined Liverpool straight from Lille, and Onana claimed he would jump at the opportunity “immediately” if a similar chance materialised.

Now, however, the Belgium international is on his way to Merseyside to join Everton, instead of Liverpool.

West Ham had agreed a €40m (£33m) fee for Onana, but the Toffees surprisingly hijacked the deal and are said to be offering the 6ft 4in powerhouse more money – he now prefers a move to Goodison Park.

Everton have matched West Ham’s £33m offer, and should he pass a medical, the towering midfielder will become Frank Lampard’s third signing of the summer after James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil.

Interest in Onana comes after he made 41 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring three goals while also providing one assist.

Everton run Liverpool risk

After hearing Onana say he would love to join Liverpool, Everton run the risk of losing him to their bitter rivals if they do not show any progress under Lampard.

Like Richarlison, if the Belgian shines at Goodison Park but the Toffees stagnate, it is likely that bigger clubs will come in and attempt to lure him away.

After all, Liverpool are said to be interested in Onana themselves, so if he proves himself in the Premier League and Jürgen Klopp decides to sign a new midfielder, Everton fans could end up sweating.

Only time will tell, but after hearing what he said about Origi and the Reds, Everton must be wary of their imminent signing’s ambition.
