According to Le Parisien, Newcastle and Tottenham target Gini Wijnaldum could now be dropped from Paris Saint-German’s Champions League squad.

What’s the story?

Well, if this happens, the 31-year-old may kick himself that he didn’t secure a move back to the Premier League in January.

The French news outlet (print version via Get French Football News) believe Julian Draxler, Ander Herrera or Wijnaldum could miss out, as PSG’s squad is too large for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

It comes after Foot Mercato claimed that Newcastle made a late move for the Netherlands international on deadline day.

Elsewhere, it was 90min who revealed that Wijnaldum was of interest to Spurs.

Of course, he wouldn’t have been able to play Champions League football this season at either of those clubs.

However, Wijnaldum would’ve felt wanted – if he is dropped from the Champions League squad, it will surely damage his morale.

Newcastle and Tottenham should be alert

Interestingly, Spanish news outlet AS revealed that Wijnaldum was keen to leave Paris last month, having found life tough in the French capital.

The ex-Liverpool man hasn’t exactly been one of the first names on Pochettino’s teamsheet this season, having made seven substitute appearances in Ligue 1.

Therefore, if he is left out of the Champions League squad as well, he will surely become disillusioned with life at PSG.

In that respect, we feel Newcastle and Tottenham should continue to monitor the situation, as he is a fine player.

After all, Wijnaldum boasts a huge amount of Premier League experience having made 217 appearances in England’s top-flight.

If he decides to leave, Eddie Howe or Antonio Conte could get themselves a fine player in the summer.
