Arsenal and Newcastle have been dealt a transfer blow as Memphis Depay is now keen to join Manchester United.

What’s the story?

Well, it was Spanish news outlet SPORT who revealed that Mikel Arteta is interested in the Netherlands international after Gabriel Jesus suffered a serious knee injury.

Also seen in SPORT was the fact Newcastle are keen to sign Depay.

The Dutchman is available for just £2m – according to SPORT – as Barcelona desperately try to recoup some cash after suffering a shock exit from the Champions League, which worsened their already bleak financial situation.

Now, however, Depay could be heading back to Manchester United.

SPORT believe the 28-year-old would like to return to Old Trafford this month, as he finds himself left in the wilderness at Barcelona – he has only played four games so far this season.

Interestingly, the Spanish news outlet add that Manchester United would like a new forward after offloading Cristiano Ronaldo, but do not want to spend lots on a fresh option.

Therefore, a move for Depay at a cut-price fee would surely interest Erik ten Hag.

Despite his woes at club level, the Barcelona No.14 reminded everybody of his talent with some excellent performances at the World Cup – his one goal in Qatar has taken him to within seven of Robin van Persie’s record tally of 50 for the Netherlands.

Arsenal & Newcastle have alternatives

If Depay does rejoin Manchester United, there are other options for Arteta and Eddie Howe.

The Athletic believe Joao Felix is wanted by the Gunners after Atlético Madrid put their No.7 on the market.

In regards to Newcastle, the Magpies are said to be interested in signing Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach – that was according to 90min, who believe talks have even been held.

Keep an eye on both Arsenal and Newcastle this month, as we expect them to be busy in the market.
