Gabriel Magalhaes’ impressive form this season could be down to the Arsenal defender’s better understanding of English, according to reports.
The Evening Standard claim that the Brazilian centre-back has been improving on his English ever since arriving last summer. And his vast understanding of the language has been key to how quickly Gabriel has gelled with Ben White.
The duo started every Premier League game in September and conceded just one goal in four matches. With Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu completing a new-look Arsenal backline, the Gunners have been solid defensively.
Gabriel joined Arsenal in 2020 for a reported fee of £23m. And the former Lille defender took to the Premier League like a duck to water, with the 23-year-old centre-back winning the club’s Player of the Month award three times in a row.
However, Gabriel’s confidence took a hit after the defender was sent off in a 2-1 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The South American talent was also in-and-out of the squad in the second half of the season.
Indeed, it was a mixed opening season for Gabriel in England. However, this campaign has seen the defender return to the squad and Premier League action with flying colours.
Better English could be key to Arsenal resurgence from Gabriel

Alongside White, Arsenal have looked calm and composed in the defence. And this could well be down to Gabriel’s better understanding of English. Last season saw the defender usually play with David Luiz, another player from Brazil.
Mikel Arteta’s defence looks solid and exciting. And Gabriel has excelled this campaign since returning to fitness at the beginning of September.
