Well, it looks like Takehiro Tomiyasu is very much on the comeback trail for Arsenal.
The Japan international has barely kicked a ball for Arsenal since the turn of the year, making two appearances due to injury.
However, he was named on the bench for the 3-1 victory over Manchester United last weekend and even got a brief cameo against the Red Devils.
And it would appear the 23-year-old is firmly continuing on the right track.
According to Football London, Tomiyasu, who joined Arsenal from Bologna last summer, made the players and coaching staff ‘gasp’ in training at London Colney yesterday.
The report claims that the right-back ‘expertly turned away’ from Salah-Eddine during a Rondo session and that everyone in attendance let out ‘cries of excitement’ at the moment of brilliance.
Is Tomiyasu fit for Arsenal?
Well, there’s no question that he’s fit, given that he’s participating in training and making the matchday squad under Mikel Arteta.
However, it remains to be seen whether he’s ready to make the first XI again, after three months on the sidelines.
The Gunners are away to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon and it’s definitely possible that the Spanish manager finally recalls Tomiyasu into his first XI.
With Kieran Tierney out for the season, it’s so important that Arsenal have at least one of their best full-backs available for the run-in as Arsenal look to qualify for the Champions League.
And thankfully for the North Londoners, it does look plausible that Tomiyasu will be available over the coming games.
Cedric Soares has proven himself an excellent deputy for the most part, so much so that some Arsenal supporters might’ve forgotten about Tomiyasu’s fitness woes.
But there’s no doubt that the 23-year-old is a superior defender and it’ll be interesting to see what impact his return has on the team.
