Tottenham have reportedly missed out on the signing of Lorenzo Insigne, with the Italian international close to a shock agreement with MLS side Toronto FC.
According to Sky Sports Italia, the Canadian franchise are putting together a financial package over five years which will make Insigne the highest-paid player in MLS history by a considerable margin.
As per the report, the 30-year-old winger, who already earns a reported £140,000-a-week for Napoli, will make €11.5m (£9.6m) a year with Toronto, demolishing the previous record of $7.2m (£5.3m) held by Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his time with the LA Galaxy as per Bleacher Report.
Indeed, with Toronto finishing a lowly 13th place in the Eastern Conference last season, the Canadian side are aiming to make a huge impact in 2022. The Reds have already appointed former USA manager Bob Bradley, and now they have seemingly won the race for Insigne.
With Fabio Paratici reportedly eager to sign Insigne, as reported by Il Processo via Area Napoli, losing on the Euro 2020 winner to an MLS side, will come as a huge blow for Spurs.
After all, the Napoli captain is a player reaching the prime of his career. And losing out on Insigne to Toronto could be viewed as a huge loss for Tottenham, especially given the ambitions laid down by Antonio Conte.
