MLS franchise Toronto FC have proposed a five-year contract to Torino striker Andrea Belotti worth €50m (£41m) over five years, with Tottenham keen on the attacker.
According to SportItalia via Sempre Milan, the Canadian club are stepping up efforts to sign the Euro 2020 winner after securing the signature of Lorenzo Insigne, who will join Toronto in the summer as a free agent.
The Napoli forward will join Toronto as MLS’ highest-paid player ever, and the Reds now look keen on offering similar wages to Belotti, with Tottenham chasing the Italian international as well this January.
Tuttosport reported in November that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are keen on signing the Serie A talisman this month. Spurs need firepower upfront, with Harry Kane the club’s only senior centre-forward.
However, Toronto seem determined to sign Belotti to join their new Italian superstar Insigne. The Ontario-based club finished 13th in the Eastern Conference and 26th overall in MLS, and this offseason has been one of a major rebuild for the franchise.
Former Swansea City manager Bob Bradly has been appointed as head coach whilst star striker and former Premier League attacker Jozy Altidore is set to leave the club, freeing up a Designated Player spot for Toronto to sign the likes of Insigne and Belotti.
Tottenham need to work fast to sign Belotti with Toronto in the mix
Conte has done a lot of good work for Tottenham in a short space amount of time, yet signings still allude the Italian coach who could do with some needed quality from the market, and Belotti brings just that.
The Italian international has been one of the most consistent scorers in Serie A for some time, and for Tottenham, they need to ensure they beat Toronto to the signing of Belotti this month, who could be the missing piece for Spurs qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
