Rasmus Hojlund maintained his professionalism throughout his time at Manchester United, even when he was being forced out of the club, and he still has a strong connection with the fans.

During the summer, Ruben Amorim and United’s football department decided to freeze Hojlund out of the squad.

He wanted to stay and compete for a place in the starting line-up but was left out of pre-season plans to make room for new signing Benjamin Sesko.

Hojlund grew up supporting United, a fact well-known when he joined. While his consistency was sometimes questioned, his work rate never was.

He is playing for Napoli this season on loan and had an impressive spell under Antonio Conte. However, it is clear from social media that he still holds United close to his heart.

Hojlund celebrated his 23rd birthday on February 4th. To celebrate, United posted a birthday message on social media, and the Napoli forward replied with a note back to his parent club.

On Instagram, the Dane said: “Thank u all for the birthday wishes. Best of luck for the rest of the season. May the success continue.”

The Red Devils are currently enjoying a three-match winning run under Michael Carrick, and it is clear that Hojlund has noticed their strong push up the Premier League standings.

Meanwhile, over in Italy, Hojlund and Napoli are also pushing hard for Champions League qualification. They are currently third in Serie A but now sit nine points behind leaders Inter Milan.

Rasmus Hojlund’s situation at Man United

Some fans have called for Hojlund to return to Old Trafford when his loan spell in Italy ends, but the situation is not so straightforward.

The terms of the deal include a £38m buy clause that Napoli must activate if they qualify for the Champions League.

With 15 games left in Serie A, Napoli are well placed inside the top four. Therefore, unless there is a dramatic collapse, Hojlund looks set to make his stay permanent.

Man United have shifted their focus anyway. Sesko is viewed internally as an upgrade, and he has already started delivering on that expectation with his goal record this season.
