Rangers were heavily linked with a move to sign Britt Assombalonga this summer, but he won’t be heading to Ibrox after all.
Assombalonga may have cost Middlesbrough a huge £15million back in the summer of 2017, but they decided to let him go for free when his contract expired on Wednesday.
The striker left Boro with 47 goals in 161 games, but having bagged just five Championship goals last season, his departure wasn’t a huge shock.
Rangers’ interest in Assombalonga
Give Me Sport reported in March that Rangers were looking to sign Assombalonga at the end of the season, with TEAMtalk adding in April that Rangers were closing in on a deal.
That became increasingly unlikely though, starting with Rangers’ move to sign Oostende striker Fashion Sakala on a free transfer.
Rangers then extended Jermain Defoe’s deal, so moving to sign another striker became less of a priority for the Gers and director of football Ross Wilson.

Assombalonga heads to Turkey
A move to Ibrox certainly isn’t happening now, as Assombalonga has decided to move over to Turkey with newly-promoted top tier side Adana Demirspor.
They confirmed the move on Twitter this weekend, seemingly believing that Assombalonga can find his shooting boots again and keep them in the top flight.
Rangers won’t be too distraught at missing out on Assombalonga having already tied up a move for Sakala, with the Zambian ace looking like a much more sensible signing.
