Rangers winger heads on loan after signing Ibrox deal until 2024

Rangers forward Josh McPake has signed a new two-year extension to his contract at Ibrox, immediately joining League One side Morecambe on loan, and Academy chief Craig Mulholland thinks there is “lots to come” from the highly-rated youngster.

McPake spent last season on loan with Harrogate Town in League Two after a stint at Morton in the Scottish Championship, impressing during his time south of the border.

McPake made 23 appearances for Harrogate, scoring four times, and will be looking to continue his progress with Morecambe – managed by former Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson.

Rangers Academy chief Craig Mulholland was delighted by the news McPake had decided to extend his Ibrox contract, admitting the Gers had a number of options for him to move on loan.

McPake had been linked with the likes of Motherwell, but the chance to have a crack at League One and face the likes of Ipswich, Portsmouth. Sunderland and Wigan.

His loan at Morecambe will keep him in England for the full season, although Rangers have the option to recall him in January.

Mulholland excited by McPake’s future

The Scotland youth international is now under contract at Rangers until 2024 and Mulholland is excited by McPake’s future, having seen him mature “massively” in the last 12 months.

“We are delighted that Josh has extended his contract and now moves up a league in England from EFL 2 to EFL 1,” Mulholland told Rangers TV.

“He has matured massively in the last 12 months as a person and as a player and this is reflected in significant improvements to his physical conditioning and his performance levels in competitive first-team football, albeit we still think there is lots to come.

“There were a number of options available to Josh, however we believe moving to League One and playing against some big clubs provides the correct challenge which he needs to meet head on in order to contribute to success at his loan club and impress the manager here at Rangers.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well on this next important step in his journey.”
