Simon Ferry has told Open Goal that Rangers transfer target Tom Davies is similar to Ryan Jack and John Lundstram – but the presenter says Davies would be a good signing for the Ibrox club in the coming weeks under Michael Beale.

Davies, 24, broke into the Everton senior side a few years ago and has gone on to play 169 times in all competitions for the Toffees. But this season, he has only played 10 times – and is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Rangers have lost Steven Davis for the rest of the season. Lundstram has been taking injections to keep playing for Rangers since Beale arrived as manager – while Glen Kamara has an underlying issue. The Gers need a midfielder.

It appears they could be on the verge of signing Davies, with Michael Beale already commenting on links. Ex-Celtic man Ferry discussed the links with Davies on his latest Open Goal video – and compared him to Jack and Lundstram.

“I think he’d be a good signing. He works hard, he uses the ball well – he’s not going to open defences, but he is like a Jack, Lundstram-type player,” Broomhill manager Ferry told Open Goal, when discussing a Rangers move for Davies.

Davies is just what Rangers need. Davis has been sidelined until the summer and with his contract expiring, it might be that the Northern Ireland star has played his last game for the Gers. But he remains important, and needs replacing.

So, bringing in a player that is just as good if not better, but 14 years younger, works. Davies is out of contract at Everton in the summer and could be available for cheap-ish fee. Everton still owe Rangers £3.7m for Nathan Patterson.

Is he like Lundstram and Jack? He is perhaps, not as physical as the Rangers duo – but you would argue he is more agile. He is quicker, and has the ability to get around the pitch more. Perhaps, more goals, too.
