Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been given “something to think about” by Calvin Bassey’s recent performances and the Gers boss admits both Bassey and Nathan Patterson are “doing everything” asked of them.
The young full-backs both impressed in the Premier Sports Cup win over Dunfermline last Friday night but Gerrard wouldn’t be drawn on whether it has earned them a spot in the Rangers side for tonight’s Europa League clash with Alashkert.

While Gerrard wouldn’t give away his team selection, he was full of praise for Bassey, insisting he “can’t do any more” as he mulls over his side for tonight’s game.
“I’m not one to give teams out 24 hours before a big game,” said Gerrard. “But what I can confirm is Calvin’s in a fantastic place.
“He can’t do any more, he is training ever so well. His confidence is high up and I don’t think he did much wrong the other night.
“I thought his performance was really strong in and out of possession and he has, since that game, given me something to think about.
“I’m really happy with both my young full-backs, they are doing everything I’m asking of them.”
With Borna Barisic struggling for form in the early part of the season so far, there’s been calls for Bassey to be given a regular chance to impress for Rangers.
The left-back is still very raw but looks a much-improved player from the one who arrived at Ibrox last year.

It will be interesting to see whether he is given the chance to properly compete with Barisic for a place in the side over the coming weeks and a strong performance tonight, if selected, would go a long way to proving he deserves it.
