Rangers are closing in on Rabbi Matondo with the winger now left out of Schalke’s pre-season training camp in Austria ahead of a move to Ibrox.
The Gers are starting to heat up in the transfer market having been biding their time.
Two signings arrived last week as Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence signed on the dotted line at Ibrox.
Colak and Lawrence should provide a major attacking boost for Giovanni van Bronckhorst but there now appears to be another forward-thinking player on their way to Ibrox.
Rangers are closing in on Rabbi Matondo
The name in the frame is Rabbi Matondo, who was in the sights of Rangers as well as Celtic early in June.
It’s Rangers who now look set to sign Matondo after Sport1 in Germany reported on Saturday that a €3million (£2.6million) deal was close.
The Glasgow Evening Times report that Matondo has now been excused from Schalke’s training camp in Austria.
Rangers have an agreement in place with Schalke for the winger’s signature and leaving him off the flight to Austria means he can now head to Ibrox.
That’s a hugely exciting deal for Rangers given that Matondo cost Schalke a huge £10million back in January 2019.
The Welsh wide man is now costing around a quarter of that with Rangers hoping to work with Matondo’s untapped potential.
A winger with blazing speed and real dribbling ability, Matondo promised so much at Manchester City but lost his way with Schalke.
Now 21, Matondo is coming off a strong loan spell with 10 goals in 27 games on loan at Belgian side Cercle Brugge.
The challenge is for Matondo to recapture that form in Scotland and do it consistently, something Schalke never really got to see.
The deal looks to be moving ever closer with Matondo set to join Lawrence and Colak in what could be a new-look Rangers attacking setup alongside Ryan Kent.
