Former Rangers manager Mark Warburton was heavily criticised for his transfer policy – but few could accuse Pedro Caixinha of the same.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton

When Rangers returned to the Scottish Premiership for the 2016/17 season after four years climbing up the lower leagues, Mark Warburton made sure that the Ibrox giants were back with a bang.

Signing a number of big names, from Joey Barton to Niko Kranjcar while also paying big for Preston North End frontman Joe Garner, it appeared that Warburton had built a squad capable of making a splash in the top tier.

Hindsight, however, is a wonderful thing. On reflection, only one of the 12 players brought to Ibrox on permanent deals since the start of last summer could be considered a success – 37-year-old centre-back Clint Hill.

Barton was thrown out of the club just three months into the season after a high-profile training ground row, Kranjcar has spent almost the entire season injured and Garner has mustered a grand total of seven goals in 30 games.

Therefore, Pedro Caixinha doesn’t have to do much to succeed where his managerial predecessor failed in the transfer market.

Jack in Ibrox

And with HITC sources telling us that Ryan Jack will turn down offers from Barnsley and the MLS to move to Ibrox, it appears that the Portuguese is on the verge of a major coup. Jack, the captain of rivals Aberdeen, is at the peak of his powers right now – unlike the ageing Barton and Kranjcar.

Furthermore, Rangers would not only be strengthening their own side by signing one of the league’s most consistent and complete central midfielders, they would also be severely weakening a direct rival.

It’s a move straight out of the Bayern Munich or Juventus textbook. And while the out-of-contract Jack is no Gonzalo Higuain or Robert Lewandowski, he could add that much needed steel and presence to the midfield – something none of Warburton’s multitude of midfield signings managed to provide.

After a difficult season, things are looking up for Caixinha at Ibrox.
