Hertha Berlin are ready to let Davie Selke tear up his contract and leave the Bundesliga outfit in January after the striker reportedly turned down summer moves to Rangers or West Brom, according to BILD

If Selke could turn back the clock, would he have made a different decision when Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Glasgow giants came calling?

BILD say that the former Germany U21 international turned down Rangers, West Brom, Basel and FC Copenhagen on the final day of the window, opting instead to fighting for his place at the Olympiastadion. In all honesty, it’s a fight he never looked like winning.

Selke hasn’t started a Bundesliga game since the opening day of the season nearly two months ago.

Could Davie Selke still end up at Rangers or West Brom?

“Nevertheless, I think he’s important in the group; on the training ground, in the locker room,” argues Hertha BSC coach Sandro Schwarz (BZ). “He pushes the boys from the outside.”

Important, maybe, but not important enough to justify his rumoured £25,000-a-week wage. Reports suggesting that Hertha are prepared to rip up the final six months of Selke’s contract – allowing the £7 million signing from RB Leipzig to leave the German capital for free – will come as no real surprise to those who have witnessed his decline from bright young thing to forgotten man.

At least, with the likes of Rangers, West Brom and co already registering their interest, Selke can take some consolation in knowing that he won’t be short of offers in the New Year. BILD add that Serie A duo Sampdoria and Empoli are also keeping tabs on his situation.

West Brom remain stuck in the Championship drop zone; just 21 goals and 17 points from 18 games. Selke, at 6ft 5ins, would give the Baggies a much-needed physical presence with Daryl Dike once again out of action.

Rangers, meanwhile, have injury issues of their own. Kemar Roofe has been limited to just 26 minutes of football all season. As such, Alfredo Morelos and Antonio Colak are short of competition and support in the final third.
